Timeline: TIGRA’s dealings with Western Union
|
|
9/18/06:
Sent letter to Western Union CEO Christina Gold with newly-minted Transnational Community Benefits Agreement (TCBA). Seventy-seven people from the United States and eight other countries met in August, 2006 to craft the TCBA to reflect the aspirations of remitters and their families everywhere. No response from Ms. Gold.
11/27/06:
NorthStar Asset Management, on behalf of United for a Fair Economy/Responsible Wealth Project and TIGRA, submitted a Shareholders Resolution and asked to include it in the agenda at the Western Union Shareholders’ Meeting in May, 2007. It asks the Board of Directors to: (1) compare their fees and exchange rates with their competition; and (2) research their corporate giving in immigrant communities.
1/5/07:
Western Union challenges the Shareholders Resolution with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on the grounds that the resolution deals with “ordinary business” of the corporation and therefore exempt from shareholder scrutiny.
1/19/07:
NorthStar, on behalf of TIGRA and UFE, writes letter to SEC that responds to Western Union’s challenge.
2/19/07:
TIGRA writes Christina Gold, CEO of Western Union, and requests her to pull WU’s challenge with the SEC and allow the proposed resolution to be heard by shareholders. No response from the company.
3/25/07:
SEC rules in Western Union’s favor and disallows proposed resolution on the grounds that the request covers the company’s “ordinary business”.
5/8/07:
City of Mexico passes resolution in support of TIGRA’s campaign. Western Union cancels meetings with City officials.
5/10/07:
More than 100 representatives from 15 cities in the United States and migrant networks in Europe, Asia, and Mexico delivers “Mother’s Day” notice to Christian Gold and WU Board of Directors at Shareholders’ Meeting in New York City. TIGRA gives company 100 days to meaningfully respond to the Transnational Community Benefits Agreement (TCBA).
6/11-6/15/07:
Thousands of emails, faxes, and phone calls from all over the world were sent to Christina Gold asking her to “be a good corporate citizen and meet with TIGRA in good faith.” No response from Ms. Gold.
|
8/10/07:
Community Representatives in Providence and Boston visit Mike Miles, Western Union Board member. No response from Mr. Miles.
8/30/07:
Community Representatives in New York visits Board member Roberto Mendoza at his Manhattan office. Mr. Mendoza refuses to meet with delegation. Representative declares that “Western Union has asked the Board of Directors to not communicate with TIGRA representatives.”
Labor Day, 2007:
Community Representatives in Chicago visits Board Chair Jack Greenberg. No response from Mr. Greenberg.
5/10 – 9/01:
Campaign collects close to 20,000 postcards from 24 cities, and sends thousands of emails and faxes to Christina Gold. Regional delegations visit Western Union Board members. TIGRA documents visits by Mario Hernandez, Public Affairs Director of WU, to organizations affiliated with the campaign offering grants and complaining about being singled out. El Pueblo, an immigrant rights group in North Carolina, gives back $10,000 to Western Union and $5,000 from Vigo (WU affiliate) declaring that “It is our hope that sponsors and donors be aligned with our values so that we can confidently offer them greater access to our community…we must make the difficult decision of declining the financial support of Western Union…”
No response from Western Union.
9/10/07:
After 120 days from May 10th, TIGRA and the more than 180 organizations we’re working with across the country, and in coordination with partners in Asia, Europe and Latin America, are calling for an international boycott of Western Union, including Orlandi Valuta and Vigo, until they sign the Transnational Community Benefits Agreement.
